Couples Therapy

A place to slow down, get curious about the patterns that keep pulling you apart, and find your way back to each other.

Maybe you keep having the same fight and can't remember how it started.

Maybe you're talking, but neither of you feels heard.

Maybe you've drifted into living more like roommates than partners, while work, money, and everything else quietly take up all the room.

Or maybe nothing is falling apart, but you both know something needs to shift before you take the next step.

You don't have to be in crisis to come to couples therapy. Often the best time is when you can feel something asking for attention.

Couples therapy with me isn’t just about fixing what’s wrong. It’s about understanding your partner’s needs and how they express them.

Couples Come to Me When They’re Navigating:

  • Fading intimacy or feeling like roommates

  • Conflict that keeps escalating, or never gets resolved

  • Talking without really hearing each other

  • Stress from work, family, or life that's taking a toll on the relationship

  • Tension around money

  • Old hurts that haven't healed

  • Uncertainty about what comes next, together

Couples Therapy with Me

Couples therapy with me isn't about deciding who's right or fixing what's broken. It's about understanding what's really happening between you, and learning to hear what your partner needs, even when it comes out sideways.

I bring together Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and depth psychology. With EFT, we look at the pattern between you rather than just the latest disagreement: the dance you keep falling into and the role each of you plays in it. Depth psychology helps us go a layer deeper, to what's stirring beneath the surface for each of you and how your own histories show up in the relationship.

From there, we practice something new: sharing what you feel, asking for what you need, and catching the dance as it starts. The goal isn't to never fight. It's to understand each other, respond differently, and find your way back to the joy that brought you together in the first place.

Modalities We May Use

Emotionally Focused Therapy
Helps couples understand the emotional patterns that shape their interactions and supports more open communication, vulnerability, and connection.

Jungian Depth Psychology
Explores conscious and unconscious patterns for each partner to help couples understand what's happening underneath the conflict.

Esther Perel’s Work
Informs conversations about relationships, intimacy, and the dynamics between partners and supports a deeper understanding of the relationship beyond the immediate conflict.

See The Pattern, Change The Response

When you understand what keeps happening between you, you can recognize it sooner and begin responding in ways that bring you closer instead of pulling you apart.

After Couples Therapy With Me, Couples report:

  • Intimacy returns

  • Uncomplicated communication

  • Openness to vulnerability

  • Clearer asking for needs

  • Know “how to fight”

  • A happier team

  • Excitement for the future

  • A deeper connection and understanding of one another

About Caroline Goan, LMFT

I take a relational approach to therapy, and I combine Emotionally Focused Therapy with Depth Psychology so we understand both the relationship pattern and what's happening underneath it for each person.

Clients say I am open-hearted and warm, and I don’t just sit there and nod my head. I’m curious about what brings you into the room, and ask questions that help you understand the pattern you’re caught in.

Before becoming a psychotherapist, I spent 10+ years working for a New York-based startup and a global e-commerce company.

Outside of therapy, I’m a big reader, love biking and walking around the lakes in Minneapolis, exploring new restaurants, and spending time with my family.

If you’re ready to take the first step, let’s connect.

Availability: I provide in-person therapy in the twin Cites, and virtual therapy via telehealth across Minnesota and New York state.
